AI video search vs a traditional VMS

The video industry sells recording and searching as if they're the same job. They aren't, and knowing which one you actually have a gap in saves a procurement cycle, and a fair few demos you didn't need to sit through.
What a VMS is for
A VMS, the software that manages your cameras, does a specific job well: recording every stream, storing it for as long as your retention policy says, managing which camera is which, showing live views, and letting someone scrub back to a moment and export a clip. What it can't tell you
What a VMS doesn't do is know what's in the picture. It can tell you camera four, Tuesday, 4:14pm. It can't tell you a person in a grey hoodie was standing by the till at that moment, because nothing has ever read the frame. Motion detection narrows the field a little, but on a shop floor or a warehouse everything is motion, so "find the person in the red jacket" is still a human sitting down and scrubbing until their eyes give out.
What AI video search adds
This is the piece that reads the picture. The same reading enables things a VMS was never built to do, too: a check can raise an alert on a named event, a theft, a fall, a missing hard hat, rather than a generic motion ping, and it can write a daily summary of what a camera saw instead of nobody watching at all.
